The basics

What is a student visa renewal in Spain?

A student visa renewal in Spain — officially the prórroga de estancia por estudios — extends your student stay so you can keep studying legally without leaving the country. You apply before your TIE expires and, once approved, receive a new TIE for your continued studies.

Spain's 2025 immigration reform updated how study renewals work, so getting the documents and timing right matters more than ever. We keep your application aligned with the current rules.

FAQ

Student visa renewal in Spain, answered

What is a student visa renewal in Spain?

It's the extension of your student stay — officially the prórroga de estancia por estudios — that lets you keep studying legally in Spain. Once approved, you receive a new TIE for your continued studies.

When should I apply to renew?

You can apply from 60 days before your TIE expires, and up to 90 days after. Filing late risks falling out of legal status, so we recommend starting around 2 months before expiry.

What documents do I need to renew?

Typically: the official extension form, passport and current TIE, proof of enrolment and payment, your previous academic certificate, proof of sufficient funds, valid private health insurance, your padrón (if you moved) and the fee 790-052. Foreign documents must be translated and apostilled.

How long does the renewal take?

The Oficina de Extranjería usually resolves it in 1–3 months. You can normally stay and study in Spain while your renewal is being processed.

How much does the renewal cost?

Our renewal package is €3,150 (special price for returning students) and includes your visa renewal, a year of Spanish classes and full legal support. Government fees (tasa 790-052 and the TIE card) are separate.

Can I renew if my TIE has already expired?

Yes — you can still apply up to 90 days after expiry, though late filing may carry a minor sanction. The sooner you contact us, the safer your status.

Can I work while I study, and after?

Student status allows limited work during your studies. After you finish, you can apply for a 12-month job-search permit or switch to a full work permit (residencia y trabajo) without leaving Spain.

Do I need to be enrolled in a course to renew?

Yes. To extend your student stay you must show academic continuity — that's why our package includes a full year of accredited Spanish classes.

Can I change course or university and still renew?

Yes, in most cases — as long as you keep studying and provide the right documentation. We'll confirm your exact situation in your consultation.

What if I miss the deadline or get rejected?

We track your renewal window so you don't miss it, and our lawyers review everything to minimise rejections. If a problem arises, we advise on the best next step.

Do you handle the appointment and new TIE card?

Yes. We book your cita previa and guide your fingerprinting and new TIE card pickup — the whole process, start to finish.

Can EU citizens use this?

No — EU/EEA citizens don't need a student visa or renewal. If that's you, we'll point you to the right option to stay in Spain.
