Regulated, recognised or accredited?
Three words used as if they meant the same thing. They don't — and the gap between them is exactly where people get caught out.
REGULATED
A public body sets the rules
A statutory regulator defines what a qualification at a given level must contain and how it has to be assessed. In England that's Ofqual. Note the subject: regulation applies to the qualification, not to the school teaching it.
RECOGNISED
Employers accept it in practice
Recognition means schools and employers take the certificate seriously. It's real and it matters — but nobody audited anything to make it happen. A certificate can be internationally recognised and still be accredited by no one.
ACCREDITED
An independent body inspected the provider
Accreditation is about the institution. An external organisation inspects the provider against a published standard and approves it to issue the certificate — including how the course is tested and how transparently it's marked.
Accreditation isn't permanent
It isn't a one-off stamp. Accrediting bodies re-inspect on a cycle, and a provider can lose the status in between. That's the whole point of it — someone keeps looking.
A moderating body does something narrower and deeper: it reads real trainee coursework to confirm the methodology is actually being applied, rather than assessing the institution as a whole.

Membership is not accreditation
A school can be a paying member of an organisation without being accredited by it. Membership means you joined. Accreditation means you were inspected.

Accreditation is never blanket
It's granted for particular programmes by a body in that field. "We are an accredited academy" is not the same statement as "this course is accredited".
How to check any provider in two minutes
- Ask for the name of the accrediting body. If a provider can't name it, there isn't one.
- Ask for the registration number and the level of the qualification.
- Look it up on the accrediting body's own site — not the school's — in their public register.
- Check the date. Accreditation expires and gets renewed. Make sure it's current.
- Confirm it covers your course, not a different one from the same school.
