Spain is the largest TEFL job market in Europe, but most positions never reach the big international portals. This is how hiring really works here, from the boards worth checking to the months when academies do most of their recruiting.
Where to find TEFL jobs in Spain
Academies hire through a mix of local boards, programmes and word of mouth. These are the sources our graduates get results from:

What TEFL jobs in Spain pay
Salaries depend more on the type of employer than on the city. Typical figures in 2026:

When schools hire: the Spanish TEFL calendar
- Late August – OctoberMain hiring season. Academies fill 70 % of the year's posts for the course starting in October. Be in Spain with your CV ready by 1 September.
- JanuarySecond wave: teachers who leave at Christmas are replaced, and exam-prep groups (Cambridge, IELTS, TOEFL) open.
- January – AprilApplications for Auxiliares de Conversación and for most assistant programmes starting the next September.
- May – JuneSummer camps and intensive courses recruit; academies pre-select for September.
- July – AugustQuietest months. Good time to do the TEFL course so you are certified before the September rush.
What you need to get hired
- A TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours. Academies ask for it in almost every listing; an accredited course with teaching practice makes the difference in interviews.
- Native or C2-level English. Non-native speakers with a C2 certificate are hired regularly, especially for exam prep.
- A university degree helps but is not compulsory. Many academies hire without one; see teaching in Spain without a degree.
- The legal right to work. EU/EEA citizens can start straight away: TEFL certification for EU citizens. Non-EU citizens usually come on a student visa, which allows up to 30 hours of work a week: TEFL course in Spain with visa and paid job.
- Spanish is not required to teach, but it makes daily life and academy admin easier: teaching in Madrid without speaking Spanish.
