Does a TEFL Course Qualify for a Spanish Student Visa? What to Verify

Before paying a deposit, establish which study programme supports the application, who delivers it and what evidence proves the relevant immigration category.

A TEFL course does not automatically qualify you for a Spanish student visa. The programme supporting the application must fit an eligible category, and the institution and teaching arrangements must meet that category’s requirements. A certificate described as “internationally accredited”, an acceptance letter or a package advertised as a year in Spain is not enough to establish this on its own. Start by identifying which programme and category the application would rely on, then ask for the supporting documents.

This article helps prospective applicants assess a course before paying. It focuses on the programme evidence within Spain’s long-stay study framework for nationals outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland. Financial, insurance and consular requirements depend on your route and the competent consulate; check the official study and training rules alongside its current checklist. Meeting the programme requirements alone does not guarantee an individual application.

Separate the TEFL certificate from the programme supporting your stay

A package may combine several things: teacher training, Spanish classes, accommodation and application support. Ask which educational activity is being used to support the long-stay application. The answer should name the actual course and provider, rather than repeat the package’s commercial title.

This matters when the TEFL component lasts four weeks but the advertised stay lasts a year. Article 52 concerns stays longer than 90 days for the listed activities. Four weeks of teacher training does not, by itself, demonstrate the basis for that longer stay. If another component supports the application, its duration, delivery and eligibility need to be checked separately.

You are looking for a clear chain: eligible activity → eligible educational institution → matching enrolment → application under the relevant category. A claim about one link should not be used as proof of the whole chain.

Before you pay a course deposit

Ask for evidence of the actual programme behind the TEFL package.

  1. Identify the provider

Legal name, exact centre and relevant recognition.

  2. Identify the study route

Which Article 52 category supports this programme?

  3. Check the programme documents

Admission, qualification, dates, timetable and delivery mode.

  4. Check your application and contract

Competent authority, personal conditions and refund terms.

A TEFL certificate and eligibility for a long study stay are separate questions.

The study category changes the evidence you need

Recognised higher education

Article 52.1(a) covers qualifying higher education at a recognised institution, on a full-time programme leading to a recognised higher-education qualification. It includes specified university qualifications and certain other programmes. A private training certificate’s level or international accreditation does not automatically establish this Spanish immigration classification.

If a provider relies on a university’s own qualification, ask for its exact name, awarding institution and programme documentation. The Ministry’s interpretive criteria, sections 7–10, pages 7–9, explain why enrolment must correspond to the actual authorised studies. Where a university programme is delivered through another establishment, a generic partnership announcement is insufficient: the applicable collaboration and certification documents matter.

Spanish or a co-official language at an eligible language centre

The language-study route in Article 52.1(e)(2) covers in-person studies of Spanish or a co-official language at an official language school or a centre accredited in Spain by Instituto Cervantes, or the corresponding public body for a co-official language. The language cannot be the applicant’s mother tongue or the official language of their country of nationality.

For a course relying on Cervantes accreditation, compare the provider’s legal name and teaching address with the official list of accredited centres. A TEFL accreditation, an examination-centre logo or company registration should not be substituted for the relevant language-centre evidence. Being listed also does not prove every other condition of your programme or application.

The higher-education exception for language studies

There is a separate possibility that is easy to miss. Instruction SEM 3/2025, first instruction, page 5, treats in-person language studies delivered by recognised higher-education institutions as higher education, subject to its mother-tongue and nationality-language conditions. Consequently, not every language course belongs to Article 52.1(e)(2).

Ask which route is actually being claimed. If a provider says its Spanish programme counts as higher education, request evidence of the institution’s recognised status and the particular teaching arrangement. The distinction can affect application options and work rights, so it should be documented rather than assumed.

Other training categories

Article 52.1(e) also contains specific training categories. Technical or professional-certification training under point 4 depends on the competent authority’s resolution setting the activities and conditions. Point 5 concerns complete programmes leading to specified Grade C professional certificates, with authorised centres and sector requirements. A course being useful for a profession does not automatically put it within either category.

Ask for this evidence before paying

Use this as a comparison sheet for any provider, including us. The purpose is to make the proposed route understandable and verifiable. It is not an official application form or a guarantee that the authorities will approve it.

CheckWhat to requestWhat the answer should establish
The categoryThe exact study category and the official rule relied on.Which eligible activity supports the application.
The providerLegal name, teaching address and identity of the institution delivering the relevant studies.Whether the seller and qualifying educational provider are the same organisation, or how they are connected.
Recognition or accreditationThe relevant official registration, accreditation or recognition for that institution and route.Evidence specific to the claimed category, not an unrelated logo.
The programmeExact course title, dates, syllabus, award and delivery mode. What you will actually study and for how long.
EnrolmentA sample of the acceptance or enrolment document, without another student’s personal details. That the named programme and provider match the claimed route.
A university arrangement, if relevantCurrent collaboration and university-issued certification covering the programme and academic year. The required documentary link where another establishment delivers a university’s own programme.
Commercial conditionsWritten payment, cancellation and refund terms, including what happens if the intended application cannot proceed or is refused.Your financial commitment and the provider’s obligations, separately from the immigration decision.

The central principle is in the Ministry’s section 7, page 7: admission to a registered or authorised centre is not sufficient if the enrolment does not match an eligible activity that the centre can deliver. This is why an exact course title matters more than a general assurance that the school is “official”.

Check the timetable without assuming a universal 20-hour rule

Ask for the actual timetable, attendance expectations and assessment plan. But be careful with the frequently repeated claim that every eligible language course must have 20 in-person hours a week.

Article 52.2 defines full-time study through enrolment in at least 90% of university credits or, otherwise, 90% of the programme. The Ministry’s updated criteria, section 4, page 4, give an indicative 20-hour teaching-load reference for the higher-education context described there, with conditions for intensive programmes. They expressly treat language studies according to their study plan, which may involve fewer weekly hours.

The useful question is therefore: “How does this programme meet the applicable category and full-time requirements?” A generic answer about 20 hours cannot establish eligibility. Equally, an online TEFL certificate should not be assumed to satisfy an in-person language-study requirement. Check the requirements for your specific route with the competent authority.

Confirm that the route fits where you will apply

A course can be academically suitable while the proposed application plan still needs changing. Under Article 54, applying from Spain depends on your current status and category. Holding a residence authorisation is different from being in Spain during a lawful short stay. The higher-education route has an in-country exception; the ordinary language-school route should not be presented as available to every tourist simply because they enrol.

Before buying flights or committing to a start date, have the intended category, your current status and the application location checked together. Keep the general filing procedure and document checklist separate from the provider’s explanation of the course.

A message you can send to a course provider

Subject: Documents supporting the study route for this programme

I am considering your programme starting [date]. Before paying, please confirm which educational activity and immigration category would support my intended long-stay application.

Please send the exact course title, legal name and teaching address of the relevant institution, the applicable official recognition or accreditation, the timetable and delivery mode, and a sample acceptance or enrolment document without personal data.

If a university or another educational provider is involved, please explain its role and provide the programme-specific documentation supporting that arrangement.

For my nationality, language background and current location, does the proposed route require any further eligibility checks? Please also clarify whether work would require an additional authorisation.

Finally, please send the payment and refund terms, including the position if I am ineligible for the proposed route or the application is refused.

How to judge the reply

  • Evidence you can use: the category, provider, exact programme and recognition are identified, and the documents match each other. This gives you a basis for an independent check.
  • Details to clarify: a recognised partner is named, but the reply does not show which programme you join, where it is delivered or how your enrolment connects to it.
  • Assurances that need evidence: “all TEFL courses qualify”, “internationally accredited means visa eligible” or “the visa guarantees a teaching job”. Ask for the specific basis before relying on those statements.

Work permission is a separate decision even after a programme has been identified. Our guide to teaching while studying in Spain explains the difference between higher-education authorisations and categories that generally need an additional work application. A package price or placement promise cannot resolve it.

Compare programmes once the route is clear

For a programme offered through TEFL Madrid, ask admissions for the current programme documents before booking. Request the identity of the educational provider and the category proposed for your circumstances. Use the comparison sheet above so that the answer can be checked before you commit.

Then compare course prices and start dates against the documented timetable and your application plan. A useful course comparison begins with what each programme can substantiate, followed by whether its training and support suit your goals.
