GETTING AROUND MADRID | TEFL JOURNEY

Madrid is a fantastic city for exploring and with such excellent transport links from the city centre all the way to the suburbs, there really are no excuses not to use them.

Getting to and from Madrid airport – TEFL experience in Spain

One of the most important things for our new students is (of course), knowing how to get from the airport to their accommodation in the city. Well you can get from the airport to the city 4 different ways.

By Train –

The airport’s terminal 4 is connected with the cercanias ( link to cercanias page). This is the over ground train for commuters in Madrid. Although this service does not run as frequently as the Metro system, it is often a lot quieter and doesn’t require any changes to get you into the city centre.

By Metro –

Unlike the Cercanias, the metro reaches all 4 of the terminals meaning that it is accessible by all travellers. The airport terminals fall at the end of Line 8 and this line will take you through to Nuevos Ministerios, where you will have to change to one of the connecting lines (6 or 10).

By bus –

If you want to see a little more of the city while you travel from the airport then the bus is the perfect way. There are two buses which run to the airport. The 200 which runs from the airport to Avenida de America between 05.10am- 23.30pm and the 203 which runs from the airport to Atocha (Making stops in o’donnell and cibeles), this service runs 24 hours a day, except to atocha station.

By taxi –

This is the final method of public transport to consider when travelling from the airport into the city centre. Taxis are located outside all arrival terminals and there is generally a lot of them waiting around to pick passengers up. A taxi from the airport to the city centre has a flat rate of 30 Euros.

Getting around day-to-day – TEFL Life

Firstly, one very important item which will make travelling around Madrid much easier is the Abono card (link to abono card site). So getting around is simple. You can take the metro , which is an extremely reliable service where trains run every few minutes. If you are unsure which route to take you can simply look at the metro map (link to metro map) or why not download the free Madrid metro app which will tell you the fastest and simplest routes to take.

If you want to take a slightly more scenic route around the city why not try the bus. With around 136 routes running daily between 06.00am and 23.30pm and 26 night routes which operate in the hours between 23.30pm and 06.00am.

You could also hop in a taxi. These drive around the city and are likely to be spotted on a regular basis. Just flag an empty one down and jump in.

Finally, Madrid is a very walkable city with most places being fairly close to one another. Although the city has fantastic transport links, you will often see many madrileños walking around the city.
